Consumer Reports suggests that pet insurance may not be cost effective. Over the life of the pet, you'll probably pay more in premiums and copays than the cost of most major surgeries. Insurance does not cover routine exams, shots, medication, pre-existing conditions, birth defects, etc. Also, as the age of the pet increases, the amount of coverage decreases. If you consider pet insurance, read the fine print.
My feeling about insurance: You're betting you're going to collect, the insurance company is betting you're not going to collect. The insurance premiums are priced so that the insurance company wins, always.
Unfortunately you cannot get pet health insurance before your pet gets sick for the same reason you can't get home insurance after your house gets flooded or auto insurance after your car gets in an accident.
