Marketing/business or graphic design degree to persue graphic design?

Shelley Stevens: Id suggest you to get a double degree with photography or another art related degree. Graphic design either pays well or doesnt.

Benita Nancy: ya, i agree with minkus. a degree will be nice, but id get one that exposes you to something more applicable to the arts. biz classes are boring. you want classes that will give you perspective. sociology, psych, lit classes etc.id also go to a portfolio school, like portfolio center, if you want to be a graphic designer or creative circus if you want to be an advertising art director.if you want to really be great, look at the student work coming out of those schools. see how yours ranks up. that is your competition. you probably can get an ok inhouse graphics job out of a 4 year degree, but the great shops, youre going to need a great book. 4 year schools dont focus on a great portfolio, but the degree. creative schools focus only on making you a great real world book.check out nov and dec's communication! arts design and ad annuals. if you like november, youre a designer. if you like dec's issue more, then your an art director.if you dont check either of them out, or dont like either, youre a page decorator, not a designer....Show more

Monty Sieloff: Well, I was told by real working designers that experience is the key. Many companies require the 4-yr degree to know that you did your time. And as far as I know, if you can do a double major in graphics & marketing, it will be awesom. You are ahead of the game!

Tobie Oshea: you don't need any degrees to pursue graphic design, employers want people with real-world graphic design experience, actually some employers say a BFA in Graphic Design is a requirement, so why not look at some graphic design job ads to see what requirements they have?

Leif Serabia: In my opinion, the only way to achieve excellence in the graphic field is studying visual communication, theory of design and the computer applications (soft! ware & hardware) as much as you can. Plus, marketing and adver! tising: You must know how to promote different kind of products to different kind of people to create a piece that sells. You are not just an artist or just a bussiness professional, you are both.Good luck!...Show more

Vernon Martorana: This is what you need, to be successful in real world situations :1. The ability to use your design software to its fullest capacity, to achieve your creativity quickly.2. The ability to arrange and design highly professional looking layouts, AND be able to recognize and implement text, spacial, color, headline, content and marketing psychology elements into your layouts.Your ability to create beautiful layouts is one thing, but your ability to create effective layouts will open many more doors for you.so...learn the design craft well, know how to use your tools....and be a persistent student of the art of marketing....Show more
