is Concorde still the best passenger aircraft today, even though it's not flying anymore!?

Herma Ellebrecht: I have to agree wholeheartedly with Lord Percy Fawcette Smythe - it is not the Concorde but the Vickers Vimey that comes to mind when talking about superior aircraft. So now you know!

Perry Deshazior: The Concorde was an amazing aircraft. At Mach 2, it is simply the best when it comes to sheer brute speed. It was literally flying at speeds faster than a bullet, while carrying 100 passengers in style and comfort. As a matter of fact, it flies faster than the speed of rotation of the earth. It's developement ranked right along with the Wright Flyer and Apollo 11. It was simply a huge step in the history of aviation, a truly brave and visionary aircraft. One of its develpmental achievements was to overcome the immense heat problems as it sped through the athmosphere. At Mach 2 speed, the air is so compressed against the body of the aircraft that it generated a lot of heat. The front of the nose generates a heat index of up to 129 Celsius---truly well a! bove the boiling point of water! Without the ground breaking and efficient airconditioning, the inside temperature of the aircraft would become dangerous....higher than 100 celsius! Like the space race, Concorde was a grand vision, a rare project the likes of which we may not see again in our lifetime. And Concorde is simply not only the best but the greatest passenger plane ever built. It is just a pity that operating it was so costly...something that the economic factual balance sheet this amazing aircraft couldn't outrun, and is one of the principal reasons that led to its demise....Show more

Shelley Stevens: I am simulating a buckled beam. In 2D it has two stable positions(one like a bow and another is its mirror image). if I apply force transversely when in one stable position it should go to the other stable position. but in between there is a point where bistability occurs and solution does not converge. help!!!!

Warren Kotter: That's tough to answer. Th! e 1920's pilot will be better at pure stick and rutter but wou! ld not know much, if anything about flying a jet. The pilot from 2011 would know more about the science of flight and high speed jet aircraft. The best pilots tend to be the ones that have flown both prop and jet aircraft and have military training and experience. Also, pilots that have mechanical training like and A and P will have a better understanding of how different systems and components actually work. The more pure pilot will be the one form the 1920's with flying a prop plane and would have better technique. The 2011 pilot will be better in a jet and understanding high speed, pressurized flight but would struggle without the use of a computer to help him fly hands free....Show more

Lillie Yarde: A few facts -Oral exam (type rating) 727, in 1969 took 8 to 10 hours time -We even had to know how many cycles/minute of the toilet flush motor -Oral exam (type rating) 747, in 2008, took 90 minutes time -One of the toughest question was "how many engines on a 747...?! "...Show more

Kirk Coolbeth: for many commercial airline flights in stepped forward countries, a working laptop or computer flies the airplane for particularly much the completed flight, with the pilots gazing in case they'd desire to take over. computers fly airplane extra economically than people. purely the takeoff and (usually) the touchdown are performed by potential of the pilots, and airplane could be landed by potential of the computer in undesirable climate as properly. The pilots can take over at any time, yet they regularly do no longer because of the fact the computer is extra helpful at general flight. On many different, smaller airplane, the pilot(s) fly the airplane, with help from an autopilot at times. the reason pilots are nevertheless on airplane even nevertheless computers fly the airplane most of the time is that the pilots function backup. while computers fail, they regularly achieve this with catastrophic effects; while human pilots are plenty e! xtra helpful at dealing with the unpredicted. A perplexed computer woul! d turn the airplane the different way up and not understand from now on helpful, yet pilots have undemanding experience and would not make that mistake....Show more

Lauri Ohl: My grandfather and my dad were and are both pilots. Grandfather with an airline, dad with the military. Most of the time you'll have a certain amount of time gone then the same amount of time back at home, alternating back and fourth. You can't take off holidays, if you're gone you're gone, if you're at home during the holidays you got lucky.

Gaston Edgcomb: yo dude quess who ?

Eliseo Luma: Family life sucks as an airline pilot until you get to the point where you are very senior at the airline you will retire at. That can take decades, if not forever, to happen. When I was an airline pilot, I was usually gone 5 days at a time with 1 - 3 days off in between trips. Yes, there were good times. I went 6 months only working tuesday - thursday and being home every night. That all cha! nged when I upgraded to Captain. It was back to reserve and gone 5+ days at a time. There were also times when I'd have 7+ days off in a row. Sure, that's great and all (you can take mini vacations without taking official vacation time) but that doesn't make up for all the negatives.Being an airline pilot is a single person's game. Once you're married with children, being gone all the time gets old real fast. You're gone every christmas, thanksgiving, anniversary, holiday, weekend, kids soccer games... Yes, it does get better but it can take a very long time and by that time, your kids are all grown up.I'll be honest, many airline pilot spouses feel like single parents. I'm not saying that your marriage or family will be doomed if you're an airline pilot but I guarantee you that it will cause more than one big fight. My suggestion is to have a backup career. Lots of airline pilots don't realize this until its too late. By that time, they are basically stuck becaus! e they have no other skills....Show more

Ronnie Barcus: It was ne! ver the best passenger jet (unless you wanted to cross the pond in a hurry and were willing to pay, otherwise it was rubbish). The fact that it isn't in service means it can't even qualify as "still the best passenger jet" anyway.

Somer Distilo: The fastest ones still flying would probably be the 747, 777, a380 which all have close to the same cruising speed which is about mach .85 which they will rarely exceed. The Boeing 747 is capable of breaking the sound barrier but the only time that happened was during its certification tests, I also wouldn't doubt that the others are capable. A couple years back while Boeing was developing the 787 or 7E7 its purpose was to build the fastest and most efficient airliner which cruised at mach .98 but Boeing has backed off that at is looking just for efficiency and now the plane will have a similar cruising speed....Show more

Lita Thammorongsa: This is a subjective question. It really has more to do with you and your family! more than anything. If you and your family can handle long periods apart and irregular scheduling, you will be fine. This holds true for any job that requires travel. Some people relish the time away, claiming that time together is better appreciated. Others feel that it is in fact too much to bear. There are so many factors that could influence the amount of time you will be away that it is impossible to determine a baseline. Some pilots and airlines fly very diffirent schedules. It is a well known fact that the industry can be difficult on families. I would encourage you to really look hard into your career options as a pilot. The airlines are not the only route and there are many other jobs for pilots that can be just as lucrative and less demanding on your family. Research, set goals and involve your family as much as possible in decisions and you will be just fine. Good luck!...Show more

Cortez Badolato: Being an old fart, I'm prejudiced for the old timers. When! I was in school I worked for an ag sprayer that had JN-4s as a back up! for our Stearmans. The old Jenny wasn't stable, it was underpowered, and I really didn't see one thing on the aircraft that was airworthy by post WWII standards. The old pilots got along just fine with them. Tho old aircraft would stall and spin without a lot of warning. When I was learning to fly in the early 50's they made me show proficiency in stall recovery and spin recovery before they let me solo. Most of the newer planes must be pushed beyond their normal operating limits to get them to stall, and spins are a no-no only to be practiced by daredevils and acro pilots. The new pilots are not even taught recoveries, much less made to practice them. On that alone I'd have to vote for the old timers....Show more

Jana Sakasegawa: Nope, I found it a little "snug" for my liking, liked the sonic boom though!the new British Aerospace plane looks a good 'un!

Josefine Weekey: It must suck to be so smart and not ask this question in the correct category.I have no id! ea.

Jackelyn Archut: The answer depends on how you define "best." If best is defined by speed, then yes it is probably the best. If best is defined by a combination of speed, fuel consumption, passenger/luggage carrying capacity, passenger comfort and range; then it probably is far from the best. If my memory serves me right, the Best by those standards would probably be the Boeing 787 dream-liner. I seem to remember that the fuselage is made of carbon fiber so to keep rigidity while dramatically reducing weight....Show more

Marna Liddie: I really want to be a pilot? but in the future i don't want to regret not being with my family that often. if you are a pilot or are in training....please answer this question. God Bless

Robbie Starchman: Certainly not, the best aircraft is the trusty old Vickers Vimey, okay so it only does 95 mph with a tail wind but when was the last time one crashed eh...answer me that then. So it has an outside bog and the pilot s! its in an open cockpit, so what, those damned pilots have it to easy th! ese days.. On the positive side dinner is served on porcelain plates with a silver service and they keep a damned decent cellar. Trouble with you Bob being Jockenese, you wont cough up the 25 guineas for a flight to Capetown, albeit it takes 2 weeks with stopovers but it is decent travel and you can get a decent game of bridge....Show more

Pam Rampadarat: Hmm, depends on how you define "best".It was a small plane, kind of cramped, actually. Fast, though. And nice to get the premium service at departure and arrival

Violette Vanek: It was and it always will be remembered as the "best passenger aircraft". It was and still is basically the masterpiece of flying art, the epitome of aviation technology, the marvel of Gallic scientific achievement, and the enlightenment of all humanities.

Corrinne Ruozzo: I prefer the airplanes that don't fly. They are much safer.

Benita Nancy: Which one couldFly better over allKnow more about the physics and ideal of fly! ingKnow how to fly the plane with no help from ComputersCould pull and do better technique just better...Show more

Jon Bergmeier: It varies according to what "type of airline pilot" you might be -You could be working regional flights, be home almost every night -Or the other extreme, international flights, away for a week or 10 days -Average airline pilots are away from 12 to 18 days per month -There are many jobs that are worse than pilots as far as absence -As pilot, you get periods of days OFF every month - i.e. 1 week -You can take the opportunity to go for a "mini vacation" each month -Difficult to do if you work in office 9 to 5 - The thing we learned, is to celebrate Xmas eve 5 days in advance -And have celebrated our anniversary at times a few days late -...Show more

Fred Caminita: Yes!Its a technical marvel - it can carry over 100 people twice the speed of sound!! And no one got poached!!All over airliners are airliners - Concorde is so unique, there is! NOTHING IN SERVICE TO RIVAL OR REPLACE IT!!!...Show more

Simona B! ulwinkle: There's more knowledge available today for a modern pilot, unfortunately most don't use it. Given your question, the 20s guy would be better with the exception of physics/aerodynamics (the sound barrier was still a wall in the sky then for example).
