Obama , seems to be pushing higher Education, our benefit or the governments coffers?

Jene Licausi: Look at it this way, the Economy is toast. They know that it's toast because they "the govt" is partially responsible for crashing it. The REAL unemployment figures are mind boggling. Even people with Phds are finding themselves laid off or working less than preferred jobs to put food on the table.School is an important decision but you have to decide if the cost is worth the return. And just so we're clear on this, the govt is always trying to swindle you out of your cash. That fact will never change....Show more

Joellen Zorrilla: I don't think I've seen anything saying the loans will incur interest. Have you? Because most countries that offer student loans through the government have interest free loans for students. It's for the benefit of the country as a whole. University in my country costs the equivalent of $400USD a year. I'd hate to have to try and get my higher education somewhere like America as your situation is at current.

Paul Maymi! : our big issue is here in the US. some of what you have written makes me want to do more research on what I asked, and back it up. Still have a few more days. But yes student loans are not free here in the US

Wilfredo Muldoon: I hope the US does not have the same problem the UK does. Not too long ago, University Education was free for all students in the UK, it was tough to get into, but places were limited to the very best students - the idea behind this was that in the long term, the government would make money as a graduate was likely to earn more money, and thus pay more taxes and spend more dosh. A graduate in the UK was seen as a long-term investment for the British government, they would make their money back, and then some! Then, the UK Prime Minister, Mr Bliar, who was educated under the "Free Higher Education for all" banner set a target that at least 50% of school leavers should go on to University, to enable this, English students (not the Scots) would h! ave to pay for tuition fees, and set up a Student loans scheme! in order for students to pay for this. But that's okay, the Prime Minister said, as someone with a University degree is guaranteed a job upon leaving and will earn more than 100k more than a non-graduate in their lifetime. What happened? We have now is students taking mickey mouse degrees - as they lapped up the guarantee of a decent job and pay, but up to their eyeballs in debt, and no jobs available for them (as employers are favouring candidates with on the job experience, as they can hit the ground running, rather than spend up to 6 months training a graduate), and interest accruing on their loan, which they have no means of paying back. Because of the number of people taking degree courses, it devalues the achieved grades. Whereas 10 years ago, employers would not look at anyone achieving less than a 2:2, good employers are looking for Firsts and 2:1 minimum - and even these graduates are competing with more experienced candidates. My mother works with a former student,! who gained a first in Physics last year, but for the last year, has been stacking shelves in Tescos, because he just cannot find a job!Good luck if Obama can pull it off, but please make sure that Yale or Harvard doesn't start offering degress in how to twirl spaghetti or something like that!...Show more

Nikita Schroepfer: It is for the students benefit , its a shame you haven't the education to appreciate that.

Star Gollnick: We're seeing the reemergence of a very familiar pattern.1. Right-wingers shout loudly about bogus story.2. Fox News picks up bogus story, reports on it incessantly.3. Right-wingers and Fox News start complaining that "liberal media" are ignoring bogus story.4. Other outlets are shamed into covering bogus story, mini-frenzy ensues.5. Pundits credit Fox News for "being ahead of the curve."6. Responsible media outlets determine bogus story is bogus long after damage is done.7. Repeat....Show more
