What kind of data should be used as forms of assessment for special education services?

Chet Nozick: First, I can't believe your principal is making you collect data on this student without any help. This is a team/school decision. The fact that you even want to refer this child is sufficient enough evidence. It is up to the school to do the rest and refer this student to the Committee on Special Education.For you (the teacher), I would suggest taking notes of any observations - basically, the reason why you are referring the student in the first place. Perhaps get together their academic information (how have their test grades been? Does the child exhibit any behavior issues? Things like this...). I would also suggest asking the principal exactly what they are referring to when they say "collect data of this student" because that is very vague.Touch base with your school psychologist, or even a special education teacher within your school. While I am unsure of the process in your school, those people are the ones who should be taking care of this referral ! and if they need something from you, they will ask but they shouldn't need more than your referral and/or academic information....Show more
